App Tutorial - Typeshift
Hello! Welcome back today I am going to give you some very valueable information concerning and application that you can use in your classroom! The name of this app is called Typeshift, as you can see the name is underlined...click on it and you will be presented with where you can download it to your device!
So, of course as teachers we are ballin' on budgets and like to know the price. Typeshift is a free download with in-app purchases. What does this mean? It means you can use it completely free of charge but if you love it and your students use it a lot you can pay a little extra ($1.99) for more puzzles and puzzles without clues. Because let's face it, if your students are using this full time they are going to master the puzzles and we want to constantly be challenging them!
Official Description:
From the creator of SpellTower, Typeshift comes a new and completely original word game! The game is where anagrams meets word searches, with a sprinkle of crosswords. Typeshift is the modern anagram puzzle combining wordplay, modern game design, and a mobile-first approach. Differing from most anagram games, where the user searches for new combinations within a single word, Typeshift has the user search within three to five words stacked & scrambled up together. Shift columns of letters up and down as you try to spell words in the center row. Play continues until you have used all letters in a puzzle at least once. The special clue puzzles combine crosswords with anagrams as the user matches clever clues.
Application in Education:
From the description you can tell that this is focusing on language arts. You can use this as a language arts station for students to work on their anagrams. It will also improve vocabulary as the students will be presented with new words and puzzles to keep them thinking. My favorite part of the application is that the app works directly with Merriam Webster Dictionary. So you can have students look up new words as they encounter them. So part of the station could be to have the students write out new words and their definitions but then make up new sentences using those words. Also as teachers we know that sometimes fun is necessary but in the school day you don't have time to give them play time for just the sake of play so the app could also be used as a pass time activity. Once you finish the assignment the app could go on a list of apps to choose from to be on until it's time for the next thing. This game is very fun but no doubt educational so they are still getting something out of their reward.
